The collaborative and symbiotic relationships among editors, authors, and the reading public are in the news these days in light of the disclosure that Raymond Carver’s widow plans to publish original versions of some of his short stories, shorn of editing by Gordon Lish at Knopf, a/k/a “Captain Fiction.” Is there an “authentic” Carver, and if so, is it represented better in the original published versions, or in versions yet to see the light of day?
